Estate at night
FRG·04 · 2026-08-02
Night here begins when the first window square turns gold while the sky still claims blue. I watch from the carpark edge with keys in pocket, not ready to go up yet.
Windows light in stagger — fifth floor, third, ninth — a pattern without conductor. Someone always forgets a curtain; a rectangle of television flicker leaks outward.
The carpark exhales stored heat from daytime sun on asphalt. I feel it through shoe soles, a slow release like the block settling its weight.
Cats traverse predictable lines between wheel hubs. They ignore humans unless a door opens with food probability. Tonight probability is low; movement is swift.
A single voice carries from a void deck karaoke session, muffled by distance into melody without words. I prefer it that way — emotion without lyric demand.
Security lamp near the lift lobby attracts moths that spiral like confused punctuation. I think about how light writes sentences in the air if you stare long enough.
Somewhere a window slides open; cooking oil scent joins the night. Layered smells tell time better than clocks when menus repeat weekly.
I count lit windows on one face of the block: twenty-three of forty visible from this angle. Not census data — a mood indicator. More lights sometimes means more loneliness visible, not less.
A motorbike arrives, engine cut early out of courtesy. The rider knows sound ricochets between slabs. Consideration is acoustic too.
Stars appear weak above light pollution but persist. I look up once, then back to windows — human constellations closer and more readable.
The fragment ends when my own kitchen light joins the pattern upstairs. I am part of the stagger I observed. Participation closes the loop.
A distant thunder rumble rolls from west without rain yet. Sky promises later; windows still open on landing four.
Motorbike headlights sweep the carpark paint lines, then darkness returns thicker than before.
I hear a single keyboard key repeat-test from somewhere — click click click — then silence. Domestic QA in progress.
Ochre emergency sign glow reflects faintly on parked car roof. Safety colour becomes ambient mood light.
TC·FRG04 timestamp twenty twenty-one: twenty-three lit windows, one flicker, cats two, me one.
Window flicker belongs to unit seven dash oh two; they replace tubes rarely but use the balcony often at night.
Car park paint smells after rain — hot asphalt releasing stored heat while sky cools.
Lift arrives at lobby with ding; sound reaches carpark open air delayed by concrete thickness.
I walk indoors deciding FRG04 ends at the lobby threshold because night estate watching deserves its own boundary.
Lobby mirror doubles the cat count briefly when one crosses polished tile; reflection glitch amuses me for a second.
Lift display shows arrow down; someone incoming. I wait to see if echo changes with doors open — it does, softer.
Security guard nods from desk without lookup today; familiarity replaces logbook ritual on quiet weekdays.
Carpark level paint arrow points uphill though ground feels flat; illusion matters when driving tired.
Void deck light spill reaches carpark edge in amber rectangle; moths orbit the rectangle patiently.
Night guard radio crackles once with weather comment — rain later — then silence returns.
